Professional coaching offers managers the opportunity to take a fresh look at the problems and concerns they face every day.

Preferred EAP staff work with managers and executives telephonically, via teleconference and in-person to increase confidence, enhance problem-solving and improve interpersonal communication skills.

Like counseling, coaching is based on a confidential, straightforward, trusting, and constructive relationship. But coaching is neither counseling nor advice-giving. It is a place to find supportive guidance by way of exploratory activities and structured dialogues.

Coaching is for those who have a gap between where they are – personally or professionally – and where they want to be. It's for people who:

  • Effective Communication & Effective Listening

    Communication is an essential element for building effective teams in the workplace.  However, communication can be difficult because it involves both a sender and receiver of information who have different life experiences, and approaches in communication. Both parties must be invested and open for effective communication to take place.

    This training will help you gain strategies for sending and receiving information, learn the skill of ‘Reflective Listening’, and understand responses and assumptions that inhibit good communication.  The more you understand about these vital elements related to communication, the more confident and effective you’ll be with your communication exchanges.


  • Managing Emotions Under Pressure

    The way you feel and behave is never caused by the way others treat you or the events that happen to you.

    Your feelings are influenced by your interpretations and the way you behave is directly related to how you feel.

    Learning to change your behavior is one of the most important skills that you can develop. Attend this program and learn how to change your interpretations which change your feelings and ultimately change your behavior. Then you will be able to manage your emotions under pressure.

  • Let’s Talk About Anger Management

    Anger is a normal emotion that can be beneficial if expressed clearly, directly and with approprite restraint. However, anger can also be a destructive emotion when it's not managed properly and often results in damaged relationships and negative consequences in the workplace.

    Chronic complaints, isolation, tension and gossip can be symptoms of unresolved or unhealthy anger. This workshop will help you understand your own anger, and look at the common causes of anger in the workplace.  We'll strategize ways to work through anger and discuss the four steps to anger management.


  • Overcoming Negativity

    Don’t let negative thinking drag you down, corrupt your career or sabotage your organization.

    In this workhop, you will learn 3 common sources of workplace negativity, identify strategies for coping with negativity and ways to prevent a co-worker’s negative mood from affecting your frame of mind and workplace performance.


  • How to Develop a "Difficult People" Immunity

    Why do we need to understand difficult people?  How can that be simplified?

    Attend this presentation and learn what makes difficult people “tick” and how attendee’s can develop immunity from the effects of difficult behavior. There is no need to “sit and suffer”!

    Understanding the sources and the rewards of difficult behavior will help attendees’ gain a new perspective. As a result, new options for dealing with difficult situations will become more apparent and the risk of becoming a victim of the difficult behaviors will be reduced.

  • Dealing With Conflict

    Conflict is a normal part of life and a natural occurrence in interpersonal relationships. 

    When conflict emerges in the workplace it has the potential of interfering with productivity and creating morale problems.

    Participants in this program will have an opportunity to examine the sources of conflict and the behavioral characteristics that intensify or prolong conflict.  Because people have different ways of dealing with conflict situations, a group exercise will allow participants to experience the various styles of conflict management and resolution.  Effective communication and listening skills will be discussed as well as tips for handling conflict.

  • Creating a Culture of Respect

    In today’s workplace so much depends on being able to work well with differences. 

    Understanding diversity and learning to welcome the differences in the workplace is the focus of this training. 

    When employees feel valued and part of a team that is working for a common goal, harmony results. Learning to value the unique contributions each employee/co-worker brings into the workplace in spite of the diversity/differences that exist is the key to developing good work relationships. This results in each member of the work team contributing to creating a culture of respect in his or her work area.

  • When You Need to Talk… An EAP Overview

    Participants will learn the components of an EAP.

    They learn how and when to access the service.  The benefits of utilizing the EAP are stressed as well as the standards of confidentiality.

  • Where to Step In: EAP Training for Supervisors and Managers
    Participants will learn the components of an EAP,  how to identify employee performance problems, develop intervention techniques to encourage improvement, understand the difference between coaching and counseling an employee and learn the steps involved in making a formal referral to EAP.
    Included is a group exercise practicing the Six Step Intervention Technique for dealing with a troubled employee situation.  


  • Understanding and Averting Workplace Violence

    As violent crime increases many companies recognize that they too are at risk.

    An act of violence could come from an employee, a customer or an employee’s family member.

    This seminar is designed to educate employees on the signs and symptoms of potential violence and to learn skills to diffuse conflict. The seminar can be modified to address the concerns of management.

  • Recognizing and Preventing Substance Abuse in the Workplace

    This seminar educates supervisors about the effects of substance abuse in the workplace.

    Supervisors learn to identify the signs and symptoms of substance abuse. They learn how to utilize the EAP and other company resources to help them deal with an employee with a substance abuse problem.

  • Emotional Intelligence

    The concept of Emotional Intelligence has been around for more than 50 years and continues to evolve with the changing social and cultural landscapes in which we operate. Emotional intelligence is generally defined as the ability to monitor our emotions and the emotions of others, to identify and label emotions, and to use that information to guide our thinking and behavior.  Understanding and developing your emotional intelligence can enhance your overall well-being, and positively impact your relationships, and job performance. 

    In this training, we will explore the concept of emotional intelligence, review its components, and provide you with an opportunity to assess your own emotional intelligence and develop strategies for enhancing your emotional skills.

  • Women and Stress

    Stress is a fact of life for all of us.  However, women have some unique challenges with stress due to the numerous roles we play everyday; spouse, mother, caregiver, friend, and employee.  Unfortunately, many women also have a difficult time engaging in self-care due to the constant pull toward caretaking others.  This often leads to a build up of stress which eventually negatively impacts overall health and emotional wellness.

    In this workshop, you will learn the science behind the female response to stress and why friendships between women are so important.  We'll practice simple relaxation techniques to decrease the intensity of a stress reaction and strengthen your  ability to "turn off" the negative effects of stress.


  • Developing Assertiveness - Yes You Can

    Assertiveness is not what you do, but who you are.

    Attend this presentation and learn about assertive communication, assertive nonverbal communication, assertive listening, assertiveness in the workplace and the benefits of assertive behaviors. We are not born assertive but we can learn the skills for assertive techniques.

    The presentation will explore the importance of a positive self esteem and positive thinking in developing assertive techniques.

    In this workshop, you will learn to identify possible triggers of your overeating, factors impacting your weight gain or loss, and strategies for overcoming emotional eating.

    In this workshop the developmental needs, physical changes, brain development and the behaviors typically demonstrated in adolescence will be presented and discussed.

    Money plays a significant role in our lives and impacts our relationships and personal well-being in both positive and negative ways.  It evokes various thoughts and potentially strong feelings, and is the driving force for many of our behaviors. 

    This training will help you explore your personal relationship with money and the impact it has on your daily life and relationships.  We’ll discuss perspectives on money management, identify strategies for addressing concerns related to finances and learn about resources that can help you improve your relationship with money.

U.S. Department of Transportation Training

  • Driver Drug & Alcohol Awareness

    DOT mandates that employers provide CDL drivers with training regarding alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, PCP, amphetamines and opiates and the effects of these substances on user health generally as well as on specific driving-related dangers.

    This program is provided by a certified substance abuse professional (SAP).

  • Drug & Alcohol Education for Supervisory Personnel

    DOT requires that supervisors of CDL drivers receive a minimum of sixty (60) minutes of training about the effects of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, PCP, amphetamines and opiates. 

    DOT also requires an additional sixty (60) minutes of training in regard to how to identify (via observed and documented behaviors), approach and refer CDL drivers who may be under the influence of these or other substances.

    This program is provided by a certified substance abuse professional (SAP).

A critical conversation is the high-stakes communication required to effectively address difficult problems or concerns. Often, these are the conversations that provoke anxiety because of the conflict that might arise. And they are too often delayed or avoided as a result of not knowing what to say and how to say it.
